At last: I can finally view my own Web site from home. Woohoo! Even though I moved my site to a new host on Wednesday of this week, it took an extra day or two for the DNS entries to propogate fully with Earthlink. I was able to view my Web site from work just fine, but kept getting an error when trying to view it from home about the Web site being temporarily unavailable. I learned during this process that DNS has to propogate in three places: registrar, Web host, and ISP. Apparently the ISP is the slowest of the bunch. But all is well now.

You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to ask your ISP how often they update their DNS. I was finally able to find that mine updates 2 times a day on weekdays and once a day on the weekends. You know if you are using windows you can create a hosts file that is just “hosts”, without any extension in the windows folder and have the IP address and domain name. On *nix machines you can change the etc/hosts file. Of course this only affects your machine…

Cool tip about the hosts file, Blaine. I didn’t know that. Good to know for next time. Of course, switching Web hosts is a pain, so I don’t plan to do it often (and hope I don’t have to).
