Friendster

Friday, January 24th, 2003 · 12 Comments

Friendster is a really cool concept. I first learned of it from fellow Vassar alum Mike Sugarbaker’s blog. I just registered through him. It’s the six degrees of separation method of meeting people who know people you know — to chat, make friends, do stuff together, or even date. It brings the whole match.com experience a step closer to home, since it’s all based on “referrals,” so to speak.

Right now the site’s in beta so you need to be invited to join, but let me know if you’re interested and I’ll send you an invite.

Update (06.05.2003): Since this entry appears near the top of a Google search for Friendster, I thought I’d add a link to my profile on Friendster. Enjoy!

I found Everyonesconnected a better site. Much more feature rich and it has something to keep you occupied. I have been logged on to Everyonesconnected.com for some time now and the site is definitely growing. New features are always being added and it has functionality to suit most users. from fun with friends, to dating and making new friends. There have even been some parties throughout the UK.

Ah, the truth comes out. I’m running the Friendster Exposed parties in SF in June so am biased to some extent, I should note. I took a couple of weeks to get into Friendster but am quite hooked now. It’s been well thought through. I think it’s quite step up on the online matching engines as it’s more ‘real world.’ I have 70 friends in the system now and am linked to 15,000 through four degrees of separation. And what a great looking bunch of people they are to. What intrigues me is how there’s so many people who have actually bothered to post photos. I’m hoping the parties show the same level of enthusiasm.

Amusing… I’m going from blog to blog reading about Friendster. About every other blog I get to, after the blog-owner’s original remarks, there’s Andy with a plug (worded the same way every time), then there’s Andy getting slapped, followed by Mark with his counter (also pretty consistently worded), and Andy apologizing.

It’s almost like trying to channel-surf during the commercials and finding that every channel has gone to the SAME commercial at the same time…

BTW, you should have left a comment on my blog somewhere introducing yourself. Good thing I got bored and checked my stats to find your url in the referring address list, hehe.

Hi I have tried both sites, with friendsters being the first. However, I find friendsters to be VERY confusing, dull and unsimple to navigate and understand. PLUS, the server is sooooo slow . I tried the everyonesconnected, and with the exception of the color clashing, I think its much more navigational, easy to understand and of course, a photo uploads before the end of a full business day 😉 So..as a NEWBIE to both sites…thats my take 😉
