I’m tired of the constant problems with my current Web host and am looking for suggestions on other hosts. Please let me know your experiences and send your recommendations my way. I thought that invoking LazyWeb would be a good way to solicit some feedback, so this post will be pinging it.
I’m considering phpwebhosting.com and recently came across Infinology, which offers 9,000 MB of disk space for less than 10 bucks per month, which seems too good to be true (so it probably is). Any experience with either of those hosts?
Here are my primary requirements in a Web host:
- Unix/Linux server
- Disk space: I need at least 200MB and preferably more
- PHP
- MySQL databases
- SSH access
- Reliability
- Regular data backups
- Ability to run Movable Type and meet its requirements
- Run custom CGIs
- Multiple domains/sub-domains
- .htaccess files, including directory redirects and protection
- SpamAssassin
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I use this service

it is a bit expensive but they have great service and are very reliable, i am very happy with them.

Doesn’t the movable type site have some recommended servers? Somewhere in the cobwebs that are my mind I remember seeing something like that.

I’m going to have to counter that mediatemple recommendation. I was originally attracted to their service because they host a number of nice design sites I like, but after using their service for the past year for freelance design, we jumped ship.
The web-based administration tools they offer are really nothing more than several open source tools, loosely cobbled together. They are often broken or too slow to be useful. When we brought this to the attention of customer service, they acted as if it was our fault and refused to offer any substantive support other than “we’ll be upgrading that box soon”. The upgrade has yet to happen.
We’ve jumped ship and bought our own dedicated box through Dialtone/Interland Hosting. I can’t speak for them personally since we just started hosting, but smooth sailing so far.

I’ve been with TotalChoice Hosting since October, and have had a wonderful experience. Great support. Friendly staff. Yada yada yada. 🙂
It also meets all of the requirements you list.

You might check out http://www.hardhathosting.com. It looks like they have everything but the Spam Assassin.

I use Page-Zone, i cant compliment them enough. They have all you want and probably more. I best bit about them is how quick customer service is and how little you’ll need it.
They have an affiliate service, and i’m it. If you decide to go ahead with them, dont forget to tell them who sent you. (faf1982)

infinology seems to be a great way to go for TONS of disk space – they actually offer 9 GIGS of storage, with sacrifices, of course. i called them today. there’s the $50 setup fee for all accounts, then $6.95 per month for yearly contract, or $12.95 per month without. if you want PHP, there’s a 1-time $25 activation fee. for mySQL, there’s a one-time $40 activation fee. and only 1 FTP account. no SSH access. so there’s no way infinology could ever be my primary host (i’m very satisfied with totalchoice anyway – and am a reseller), but i’m thinking about using them for a backup/photo hosting site. mmm….9 GIGS…
