Former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Rose
Bird, one of the most haunting and controversial figures in California
history, died Saturday in virtual obscurity, but the impact of her
decade as California's highest jurist remains profound long after her
departure from the bench.

Gov. Gray Davis' failure to make key appointments to California's
boards, commissions and bureaucracy.

Years ago, two candidates for the state Senate,
Gary Hart and Charles Imbrecht, ran against each other. Hart won. At
the time, political observers in the Capitol watched the race closely,
noting that these were two respected candidates and believing that
whoever was the victor, the people of the state of California would
lose an excellent elected official in the Senate.
