Friday: Happy hour with Hugh, Jami, Alexis, and crew at Brindisi’s, followed by drinks at Thirteen and games at the Chandlers’.
Saturday: Chill day around the house; enjoyed being outside and living in a small town when friends stopped by to hang out; rode bike to Justin’s; hung out with Ken and Joe; went to sleep early.
Sunday: Dad and mother-in-law over for a wonderful evening BBQ and Scrabble on the front porch. Dad and Jen open the game with an unprecedented seven-letter, 50-point bonus each (HONESTY and DEAREST, respectively).
Monday: Tokyo Drift with Dad. Aww yeah.
New camera (we want to upgrade before our big trip to Spain next month): Soon to get a Canon PowerShot Digital Elph SD600 (Steve’s Digicams | CNET Review) to replace our current PowerShot S50, purchased in December 2003. The SD600 is on Steve’s list of best cameras. Jen and I used to have one of the original Digital Elphs (S110) and miss the small, portability of that camera. We also want something faster than our current S50, which has a 5-second delay between power-up and first shot, and a 2-second between-shutter lag time. According to Steve’s Digicams, the new SD600 in our future is very fast (a big requirement for us, along with small size and high picture quality):
“Shooting performance was very robust with power up until the first image captured took only 1.3 seconds! Shutter lag, the delay between depressing the shutter button and capturing an image, was almost instantaneous (less than 1/10 of a second) when pre-focused, and only 1/10 of a second including autofocus.”

Hey Gabe,
Sounds like you and Jen are having a blast with all the traveling you are doing. I am sure you will share some great tales and pictures. Once you decide on a camera that is.
I personally shoot pics with a Canon SD400, it is more of a pocket camera than anything else but with months between charges and 5 megapixel shots its a great machine. They have a newer mode the SD450 but I doubt its the line of camera you want to take vacation photos.

SD600 sounds like a fine camera. If your hands suffer from motion blur, check out the Panasonic digicams. All Panasonic models have built-in image stabilizers; they are also metal and made in Japan; but they also all have either too much sensor noise or too much noise reduction.
I personally use a Canon A620. I like having a hand-grip. The weight and size don’t bother me.

I’m not sure about all of “Steve’s” recommendations- but the Cannon SD600 seems like a keeper.

I spent yesterday searching reviews on the sd600, all very good. I picked up the camera today for my wife as she was tired of her old 35mm . Quite a remarkable piece of work, fit and finish are amazing. Looks to be simple enough for her, power, piont and shoot. I am actually looking forward to printing out the photo’s.
It is 4th of july, should be a great venue to road test this camera.
I recommend after your purchase some accesories,spare battery and some scratch guard cut outs to cover the display.
We now have 3 cannons (a70, a95,sd600) and a 2.1 nikon, I would not trade any of the cannon’s for anything, flawless in use and overall abuse.
DEFINITLY a must for a pocket sized memory maker.
