What’s your start page?

Thursday, August 17th, 2006 · 4 Comments

I posed the question a week ago about what feed reader you use. Thanks to those of you who responded! This week I ask: What’s your start page? That is, what site fires up along with your browser every day? What’s your window into the world?

For the longest time, my start page was My Yahoo. Then it was Google News for years. And lately, as I mentioned last week, it’s been Netvibes. But I’m not convinced it should stay that way. It can be a bit too overwhelming. That is, as handy as it is to have all my feeds on one, two, three, or more pages, it feels a little stressful. I suppose I need something simpler.

I’ve experimented with customizing Google and like the concept of Newsvine. The age of the mashup and aggregate Web services makes it even more difficult to choose. The Web 2.0 Awards even have a special category just for Start Pages (the winner was Pageflakes, another mashup similar to Netvibes I’ve briefly explored).

So, what’s your start page?

    My start page is “about:blank”.

It loads really fast, even over dialup! It is the greatest start page ever.

I use Google’s main page because it loads a hell of a lot faster than Yahoo. Not nearly as fast as “about:blank”, but I frequently want to find something and don’t want the Yahoo bloat.

I used to have the Universal Preservation Hall page as my startup (www.UniversalPreservationHall.org). It loads slowly but is totally worth the wait. Now, however, I’ve returned to the boring mail.yahoo.com.
