Anti-War Sites

Thursday, February 13th, 2003 · Comments Off on Anti-War Sites

I just received this list of anti-war sites from my friend Dave, who received them in an email newsletter. I thought it would be handy to post them here for the world to see (and for my own reference later).

I haven’t yet perused through all of these, so I don’t necessarily endorse every one, but they all have promising names.

MT 2.6 Announced

Thursday, February 13th, 2003 · Comments Off on MT 2.6 Announced

six apart announced the forthcoming release of MT 2.6 with this press release:

Six Apart releases announces Movable Type Pro, releases Movable Type 2.6

Yes, the “releases announces” part is the headline. I guess they’re just either super-tired or super-excited about this release.

I know I am both of those things right about now: Pretty tired and also pretty psyched to hear about a future MT release, being the MT freak that I am.

Happy Hour at Yancy’s Saloon

Thursday, February 13th, 2003 · 2 Comments

Toward the end of a really fun night out last night with a bunch of friends at Yancy’s Saloon on Irving (2nd party night this week!), Ben and I had an interesting encounter with some folks who were determined to push us off our comfy couch. Below is an excerpt from an IM conversation I had this morning conveying the story (friend’s name and comments taken out to protect her anonymity):

Gabe: oh! after you guys all left ben and i were chilling on that couch just looking all around the bar – very chill – and jen and jess were playing ms pac-man….

Gabe: so then these 2 chicks come over and ask if they can sit down in our little area….we say no problem. they sit down, then they’re just sort of sitting there, not saying a word….

Gabe: so then ben and i get all uncomfortable – like they’re waiting for us to hit on them or something! …..

Gabe: then a 3rd chick comes and still silence…ben and i are still chilliin’ out..
Gabe: then suddenly about 5 more people come and they’re totally trying to push us out of our little area!! when the rest of the bar is virtually empty!

Gabe: then chick #1 offers OUR couch space to her guyfriends (“you guys don’t mind sharing, do you??”). he doesn’t sit down…

Gabe: but then she says something about how we look cute on the couch with the big heart on the wall above us!! so now she thinks we’re gay….
Gabe: then jen and jess come to our rescue and sit on the couch with us. the crowd clears out when they realize we’re not going anywhere!!
    Gabe: it was sooo obnoxious!!

Own Your Own Hovercraft!

Thursday, February 13th, 2003 · 4 Comments

Some spam that manages to sneak past SpamAssassin and into my inbox is too good to let slide. I’m now considering purchasing my own hovercraft. The only thing that sucks is that it’s a toy hovercraft and not a real hovercraft. Hovercrafts are cool. If I had a hovercraft, I could float down the streets of San Francisco to the water’s edge, then just keep on cruising across the Bay parallel to the Golden Gate Bridge to get to work every day. That would rule.

How to Protest the War

Thursday, February 13th, 2003 · Comments Off on How to Protest the War

I added my name to the Not in Our Name protest statement back in October and late last night received the latest email update from the campaign about ways we can fight the administration’s hell-bent desire to go to war:

    Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 20:55:15 -0500
    From: Not In Our Name
    To: Gabe
Subject: This war is not inevitable

    Dear Gabe,

As everyone can see, the clock is at five minutes to midnight. The Bush administration is hell-bent on war. It is a war that is wrong, and we must stop it.

At this point everyone must act as though the future of the world depends on it . . . because it does. Here are three important ways that you can take action.

First, you can participate in antiwar actions throughout the country on February 15-16. For detailed information go to http://www.unitedforpeace.org and http://www.internationalanswer.org.

Second, you can stand with Arthur Miller, Sam Hammil and the major poets of America who are speaking out against the war. In New York, there will be a major program “Poems Not Fit for the White House” on February 17 at Avery Fisher Hall, the Lincoln Center. For details see
    http://www.nion.us/poems_not_fit.htm.

Third, the Not In Our Name Project is calling on the entire peace movement to join together in a national day before the war begins, a day when everybody stops normal activity and participates in many different forms of opposition to the war. Hopefully this can happen by the end of the month. Watch for details at http://www.notinourname.net.

As you may have heard, both Stars and Stripes and the Military Times publications have pulled the Not In Our Name statement from publication after accepting our ad and payment. Even before the war, wartime censorship has set in. To continue getting the statement published, please send your contribution to Not In Our Name, 158 Church St, PMB9, New York, NY 10007.

I will be at the San Francisco protest this Sunday, February 16, 2003. What are you doing to fight the war effort?

Don’t be scared or intimidated by the code orange terrorist alert. This is day 7 of its being at that level. Why? American support for the impending war is dwindling and the government needs to scare us into supporting it.

Oh yes, and for the love of God, don’t forget to buy your code orange duct tape — “THE ONLY THING STANDING BETWEEN YOU, YOUR LOVED ONES, AND YOUR FAMILY FROM THIS NEFARIOUS AND DIABOLICAL ATTACK.”

Countries & Languages

For those of us who do not have the country-language matrix of the world memorized, this site is quite helpful:

Ethnologue country index

I came across it while researching a work-related question, but definitely a handy site for more reasons than to do my job better.

My Next Job

Wednesday, February 12th, 2003 · Comments Off on My Next Job

This guy has the coolest job requirement ever: Tweaking the nipples of pre-video J. Lo. If I were Ben Affleck, though, I’m not sure how I’d feel about someone besides me having that job. But since I’m not ol’ Ben, I think I will submit my resume for this job. J. Lo’s nips definitely have that “Jenny From the Block” attitude.

Super Scanning

Wednesday, February 12th, 2003 · Comments Off on Super Scanning

As mentioned by Ming the Mechanic, I also find this site on Newseum.org, which scans the daily front pages from 189 newspapers around the world (!), very interesting. Having grown up in a family of writers and journalists and having done a stint as a journalist in running my college newspaper and interning for the Poughkeepsie Journal, I find this kind of thing very close to my heart. That, and I think historical preservation is so important and necessary to understand the world around us.

Fantastic Voyage

After a bit of initial frustration with the connection not working and the DSL modem not cooperating with my router, my Earthlink DSL connection is alive and well. And it’s hauling ass. In fact, according to the Bandwidth Place Speed Test, I’m getting a downspeed connection rate of 1.2 megabits per second, which is fantastic, according to my test results.

Now I will be able to work from home in style, starting tomorrow.

Oscars for Discreet & Kudos to LOTR II

Tuesday, February 11th, 2003 · 1 Comment

It’s really cool to work for the (parent) company that enables great movies to be made:

Autodesk – Press Room – Eighth Year in a Row – Discreet Clients Sweep Academy Award Nominations for Best Visual Effects Oscar

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Spider-Man, and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones are all awesome movies, which are quite worthy of these nominations. I’m pulling for LOTR, baby!

While I’m on the topic, I don’t think I ever got around to writing a review of LOTR II, but I will say this: It kicked some serious ass. I liked it more than last year’s Fellowship of the Ring. It was visually powerful (I almost wrote “visually stunning,” but that’s such a cliche), intense, nerve-racking, and an all-around solid emotion-inducer, which I believe is the sure sign of a superb film.
